Artist Statement — Chris Page

Painting and photography created in response to walking the land.
Merging the boundaries between abstraction and landscape.

Long based on the observation of nature and natural processes, I center my work on being present and holding contemplative attention on the process of transformation visible in the sky, ocean, and landscape. My practice begins with a walk performed as a solo or group art experience, during which I take documentary photographs. This walking and witnessing practice informs the paintings in my recent body of work.

Painting in an intuitive fashion, I often work in bursts of intense, concentrated energy, applying acrylic paint in a broad range of techniques. I frequently use repetitious gestures to buildup complex forms and rhythms. My goal is to move beyond the tradition of painting as a snapshot or fixed view to instead touch on a quality of time that reflects a continuous process.
